According to the Bangladesh Engineering Industry Owners Association, there are almost 40,000 LE companies employing approximately 600,000 people in the country. The sector meets half of the domestic demand for electrical goods. Despite being adversely affected by the COVID pandemic, LE exports grew by 67% YoY in FY 2020-21, earning USD 489 million, an improvement from the USD 300 million earned in FY 2019-20. Nearly 1/4 of all exports are bicycles, and this percentage has room to rise as people become more interested in environmentally friendly transportation, particularly in EU nations. Developing the light engineering sector can increase economic stability and reinforce Bangladesh’s economic sovereignty by decreasing reliance on imports.
